Terms and conditions
The terms that apply when you commission or buy an original painting from Lois Thompson Art.
Last updated 14 July 2026
About these terms
These terms apply to enquiries, commissions, and purchases made with Lois Thompson Art, the trading name of Lois Thompson, an independent artist based near Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire, United Kingdom. They are governed by the law of England and Wales. By commissioning or buying a painting you agree to these terms; nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Enquiries and consultation
You can start a conversation through the enquiry form. An initial consultation to discuss your ideas, size, materials, and references is free and places you under no obligation. Nothing is agreed until a price and scope are confirmed in writing between us.
Commission pricing and payment
- Commission prices are calculated per square inch and confirmed to you in writing after the consultation. There is no fixed price without first discussing your piece.
- To begin work we ask for a deposit of half the agreed price. The remaining balance is due on completion, before delivery or collection.
- Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
The commission process
Lois works closely with you throughout, sharing working sketches for your approval before completing the piece. This collaboration is intended to make sure you are delighted with the finished work. Each painting is handmade and original, so slight variations from any sketch or reference photo are part of the nature of the work. Lois aims to complete a commission within two to three months, depending on the scale of the piece and current commission volume. Timescales are estimates and not guarantees.
Deposits and cancellations
Because commissions are made specifically for you, the deposit is non-refundable once work has begun, and completed commissions are not refundable. If you need to pause or cancel, please contact us as early as possible and we will do our best to find a fair way forward.
Buying an available painting
Paintings shown as available in the shop are original, one-of-a-kind works. This website does not take payment online; to buy a piece, please enquire and we will arrange payment and delivery with you directly. A painting is only reserved once we confirm your purchase.
Framing and delivery
Framing is discussed and arranged with you and may be handled by Lois or by a local specialist of your choice; some works can be mounted and varnished instead of framed. Where you are within a reasonable radius, Lois can deliver in person. Otherwise, work is sent by post with suitable packaging. Please check your painting on arrival and let us know promptly of any damage in transit.
Copyright
Lois Thompson retains the copyright and all intellectual property rights in every painting, sketch, and image, including commissioned work, unless we agree otherwise in writing. Buying or commissioning a painting gives you ownership of the physical artwork for personal enjoyment, not the right to reproduce or sell copies of it. Lois may use images of the work to promote her practice; if you would prefer a commission to remain private, let us know and we will respect that.
